Coastal Medicare Connection
Has your NEW MEDICARE CARD arrived in the mail?
Are you already 65, or close, and wondering if your card will automatically be sent to you? By now, most of you that are 65 or older should have heard that Medicare will be issuing new cards. They started this roll out April 2018. These new cards should be automatically mailed to you. The new cards will no longer contain your social security number or require your signature on the card.
If you are close to turning 65, the automatic mailing of your new card may only happen if you’ve already begun taking your Social Security benefits.
Medicare will never call, email, or text you to ask for personal information or to discuss your “new benefits”. If you are receiving these calls, it is a scam!
If someone shows up at your door asking if you’ve received you new card or your birthday card, for turning 65, this is also a scam. Beware, this is not legal!

Diabetes Prevention Now Covered by Medicare
Since April, Medicare covers the cost of programs for enrollees diagnosed with prediabetes. Such programs provide personal coaching on lifestyle changes and access to support groups to help you succeed. Increasing physical activity, improving eating habits and achieving even modest weight loss can greatly reduce type 2 diabetes risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), such programs can reduce the odds of developing type 2 diabetes by 71% for people over
age 60 diagnosed with prediabetes.
Nearly half of Americans aged 65 or older have prediabetes, which means they are at risk for type 2 diabetes. And most people with prediabetes don’t even realize they have the condition. To find out if you are at risk, you can use an online screening tool. An easy and entertaining one is a 60-second prediabetes screening video on YouTube called “Hedgehogs on Vacation”.
If you find you are at risk or if you want your doctor’s input, ask for a prediabetes blood test. If your blood test results show you have prediabetes, ask about a Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program (MDPP) near you. If there isn’t one, locate one through the CDC’s database at NCCD.CDC.gov/ddt_dprp and ask if it is a Medicare program. Taking advantage of one of these new, no-cost pro-grams from Medicare could be one of your best decisions yet.
