Coastal Medicare Connection August 2018

Coastal Medicare Connection
August 2018

Has your NEW MEDICARE CARD arrived in the mail?

Are you already 65, or close, and wondering if your card will automatically be sent to you? By now, most of you that are 65 or older should have heard that Medicare will be issuing new cards.  They started this roll out April 2018.  These new cards should be automatically mailed to you. The new cards will no longer contain your social security number or require your signature on the card.

If you are close to turning 65, the automatic mailing of your new card may only happen if you've already begun taking your Social Security benefits.

Medicare will never call, email, or text you to ask for personal information or to discuss your "new benefits".  If you are receiving these calls, it is a scam!

If someone shows up at your door asking if you've received you new card or your birthday card, for turning 65, this is also a scam. Beware, this is not legal!

I am a Licensed Insurance Agent/Broker who specializes in Medicare Supplemental and Medicare Advantage for the Orange County area.

From the analysis of when to activate your Medicare A & B & D through the actual enrollment, into the right coverage for you, I will guide you through all the appropriate steps and be your advocate year after year.

Are you or a friend turning 65 and not sure what to do?

It will be easy to get you set up prior to your birthday month. There are some rules you must follow to avoid penalties. Call me for guidance or to set a no cost, home appointment. Isn’t it great that you DO get something for free! My service is to help you through activation into Medicare A & B and enrollment into ANY plan of your choosing and making sure you include your Part D (drug plan) to eliminate any mistakes. I am compensated by the Medicare Plans themselves, so there is never a fee. I get paid exactly the same regardless of the company, so you are safe in knowing you do have a completely unbiased Agent in your corner. Even if it is past your birthday, I can still help. Call me to learn more. If you’re not the one Turning 65, please feel free to pass my name along to a friend that is. They will Thank you!

Diabetes Prevention Now Covered by Medicare

Since April, Medicare covers the cost of programs for enrollees diagnosed with prediabetes. Such programs provide personal coaching on lifestyle changes and access to support groups to help you succeed. Increasing physical activity, improving eating habits and achieving even modest weight loss can greatly reduce type 2 diabetes risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), such programs can reduce the odds of developing type 2 diabetes by 71% for people over
age 60 diagnosed with prediabetes.

Nearly half of Americans aged 65 or older have prediabetes, which means they are at risk for type 2 diabetes. And most people with prediabetes don’t even realize they have the condition. To find out if you are at risk, you can use an online screening tool. An easy and entertaining one is a 60-second prediabetes screening video on YouTube called “Hedgehogs on Vacation”.

If you find you are at risk or if you want your doctor’s input, ask for a prediabetes blood test. If your blood test results show you have prediabetes, ask about a Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program (MDPP) near you. If there isn’t one, locate one through the CDC’s database at NCCD.CDC.gov/ddt_dprp and ask if it is a Medicare program. Taking advantage of one of these new, no-cost pro-grams from Medicare could be one of your best decisions yet.

A Note of Thanks for Referrals

I try to recognize each referral I am aware of, but if I have missed anyone, please let me know! Just send a quick email so that I can send
you a “thank you”. It’s a true compliment and an honor when you pass my name along to your friends.

Thank you for placing your trust in me!

2018 Mortgage Interest Deduction

2018 Mortgage Interest Deduction Update

There have been a few changes to the rules of the homeowner Mortgage Interest Deduction that took place in 2018.

The Mortgage Interest Deduction is used to reduce your income tax liability when you have a mortgage loan on your personal residence and or on a second home.

When mortgages have been originated after December 14, 2017, the interest on the first $750,000 of the mortgage qualifies for the Mortgage Interest Deduction.  The qualifying loan amount has been reduced by $250,000.  For loans originated prior to December 14, 2017, interest on the first $1,000,000 of mortgage qualifies for the Mortgage Interest Deduction.

The guidelines for Home Equity Lines of Credit (HELOC) have also been changed added a few new limitations.

To qualify to take the Mortgage Loan Deduction in 2018, the HELOC needs to be used to substantially improve the residence securing the Home Equity Line of Credit. The Home Equity Line must be used only to fund improvements that add to the property’s market value, extend the property’s useful life, or used to remodel the property to residential use.

If the Home Equity Line is used for other purposes such as college tuition, vacation or personal item purchases, the interest is no longer deductible.

These new changes are supposed to be in effect until the beginning of 2026.

To read the complete article, please see Mortgage Interest Deduction Changes in 2018.

Building Muscle to Burn Fat

Building Muscle to Burn Fat

Building Muscle to Burn Fat

Do you include some type of strength training in your weekly workout plan?

My name is Haven Schulz, owner of Health Haven Personal Training Studio in Laguna Beach. I have first-hand experience when it comes to the benefits that building muscle can bring.  Everyone has different goals when it comes to their physical fitness and appearance.  Not everyone wants to look ripped and/or muscular.  Just because you start lifting weights doesn’t mean you will look like that.  One of the main reasons I encourage my clients to include strength training is because building muscle can, YES, help you burn more fat!

Let me explain.  When your body is “at rest” during your day, you have a certain number of calories you burn. Maintaining muscle mass burns more calories than maintaining fat.  So, when you build muscle your metabolism does speed up because it takes more calories to keep that new muscle maintained than it did the fat you used to have.

However, building muscle to burn fat is not the only benefit.

Building muscle can also:

  • improve your posture
  • improve your endurance
  • prevent you from injury
  • and so much more!

At Health Haven Studio, I train a lot of clients who participate in a variety of other activities such as yoga, biking, swimming, surfing, etc.  Weightlifting has improved all of their performances in those different activities.

Ok, so if building muscle burns fat and can improve and strengthen your body to enjoy the activities you want to participate in, then why not include it in your week?!

Maybe you have never lifted weights before and need some guidance?  Well, that’s what personal trainers like me are here for!  Before you add strength training into your workout routine, I highly encourage you seek out some guidance to learn proper technique and mind-to-muscle control.

10 Summer Fitness Tips

10 Summer Fitness Tips

10 Summer Fitness Tips Laguna Beach City Guide

10 Summer Fitness Tips:

Well it’s that time of year again Laguna Beach Community! Summer is here! My name is Haven Schulz, personal trainer and owner of Health Haven Studio. I know many of my clients have been working very hard in these last few months leading up to Summer, but that work doesn’t stop here.  Actually, summer is a great time to focus on your fitness and nutrition.  Here are my 10 Summer Fitness Tips to hopefully help you stay on track or get on track!

#1.  WALK IT OFF
The gorgeous weather gives you no excuses to not get outside and move. By walk it off, I am not only referring to weight, but stress as well.  If you are cooped up in your office for the majority of your day, I encourage you to go outside during a break (even 10-15 minutes), relax your mind, and walk it off!

#2  DRINK SMART
Opt for water whenever possible.  Keeping hydrated has been proven to help with weight loss, decrease bloating, improve digestion, and so much more.  When it comes to all the other types of drinks, I highly recommended you plan ahead.  I know it sounds so elementary, but please drink responsibly for your health, safety, and goals!

#3  DECREASE YOUR SUGAR INTAKE
Leave the candy, cookies, and cakes for the winter holiday season.  Enjoy the natural sweetness that comes from the earth. I am talking about FRUIT! I encourage my clients to include apples and berries in their diet on a regular basis.  One yummy snack that I love in hot summer days are frozen grapes (also a healthy snack for your kids).

#4  HIT THE BEACH
There are so many ways here, in Laguna Beach, to get your exercise in while having fun.  Take an early morning walk on the beach, grab a board and get in the water, or simply chase your toddler around for hours.  You can also incorporate the hike up the Thousand Step Beach stairs at the end of your day!

#5  CHECK OUT THE VIEW
Hit the trails surrounding our beautiful city and you will be rewarded with some gorgeous views! Crystal Cove State Park and Top of the World are some of my clients and my favorites!

#6  GO OUT TO EAT
What?!?!  Yes, I am serious! There are many healthy options to choose from here in Laguna Beach! Don’t stress about going out to eat with your friends and/or family.  Choose your meal wisely and enjoy the company. I always opt for whole, real foods such as meats, veggies, legumes, etc. You can opt for dressing/sauce on the side and skip the fried foods.

#7  PLAN YOUR SCHEDULE
Summer can give you a crazy schedule.  When it comes to your exercise, make sure you plan and commit to at least three days a week of workouts. Sometimes this requires you to join a class, hire a trainer, or schedule time with a friend.

#8  HAVE HEALTHY SNACKS AVAILABLE
Crackers and chips are easy options to bring to the beach, but make sure you and your family and getting the nutrients that need.  I like filling an ice chest with large carrots, cucumbers, celery, etc. to snack on all day.

#9  GO TO THE FARMERS MARKET
Every Saturday morning, we have an amazing Farmers Market here in Laguna.  Make it a tradition to go at the end of each week and grab some amazing local options to have for the upcoming week.  There are a variety of fruits, veggies, nuts, eggs, meats, spices, sauces, etc. that will keep you on track and feeling good.  Plus you are getting out and supporting your Laguna Beach Community!

#10  MAKE SOME HEALTHY SWAPS
These are some of my secrets to success during the summer:  If you looooove ice cream, swap your regular brand for Halo Top or Arctic Zero.  Arctic Zero even has ice cream bars that are under 100 calories.  Another delicious option is to make shaved iced sodas by using the soda brand Zevia.  I love their refreshing root beer flavor!

Well, those are your Laguna Beach Ten Summer Fitness Tips brought to you by Health Haven Studio! I hope you have a healthy and fit summer 2018 here in Laguna Beach! For any further questions about personal training, nutrition guidance, or more tips about creating a healthy lifestyle you can contact me, Haven Schulz!

Look for Savings and Senior Discounts where you might not have guessed!

CPAP machines (used for Sleep Apnea and can be life saving) typically run on electricity all night. I recently learned there is a program available through most Electric/Utility companies that offsets the energy used by a CPAP machine. In my friend’s case, an extra 495 kilowatt hours per month at the lowest Tier/Rate were added for his needs. This cut his electric bill in half! I did call our local Southern Orange County SDGE to inquire, and I was able to confirm that this is not an income-based discount plan. It is assistance for anyone who uses an Electrical Medical Device. Approval requires a form filled out and signed from your doctor for proof of the need. Call your local electric company and inquire.

Now for some of the fun stuff!

Senior discounts do vary by location. Before heading out, call your local store to ask about their discounts for seniors.
